Other Stuff Jon Does
Other Stuff Jon Does
A collection of my other activities that don't exactly fit in professional services or anywhere else, but stuff you might want to know about.

PERSONAL VIDEOS
After years of striving for perfection in my corporate work, I found that making funky little video projects was a great release from the obsessive pursuit of perfection.

Afterlife
Although I am aware of the techniques involved in professional video craft, I studiously avoid all of them, concentrating on the idea itself, and knocking off the video using iMovie on my laptop.

The Afterlife video was made for Nicole Pierce's Egoshow.

You may watch the video at your own risk. (It contains one dirty word, and opinions about religion and spirituality that might conflict with your ideas.)

POISON IVY
One day as I was photographing a poison ivy plant, a family of Russian immigrants asked what I was doing. They said they had heard about poison ivy but had no idea what it looked like.

It occurred to me that a web site about poison ivy, with identification posters and cards might be a good idea.
Poison Ivy Dude
Mr. Poison Ivy ?
As a teenager on the family farm I had the chore of driving the old John Deere around the fields and spraying the poison ivy with broadleaf herbicide. (This was in 1965 or so and the stuff I was spraying was much like the infamous Agent Orange.)

In any case I developed the knack of spotting poison ivy wherever it grows—I notice it along the road while speeding along on the highway.

So I built the poison ivy web site with stories and photos. During the summer months this is an extremely busy site. When I'm not packing and shipping products I spend my time answering poison ivy questions via email and trying to explain to my friends how this happened.

THE TRAILSIDE MUSEUM

The Trailside Museum is a remarkable little museum in Milton that:

  • Has live wildlife exhibits
  • Nurtures injured wild animals
  • Runs top-notch education programs
  • Operates a terrific summer camp
  • Provides lectures with live animals
  • Conducts groundbreaking research on spotted owls
  • Is funded by the Commonwealth
  • Is operated by Mass Audubon
  • Struggles to stay open against budget cuts
  • Would love you to come visit and bring all the kids you know

what I do
I serve on the Sanctuary Committee for the Trailside, helping hard-working Director Norman Smith to keep the place chugging along. We raise funds with a yearly auction and other events, plus we mobilize public support to keep the museum open.

I took portraits of some of the residents of the museum, shown at left, which I made into prints to sell at the auction.

Currently I am working on creating a set of postcards for sale at the Museum shop.

EGOART
Dancer and choreographer Nicole Pierce founded this one-of-a-kind troupe some years ago, putting on the infamous EgoShow I. Now we are up to EgoShow 5 and the movement is growing.
Nicole Pierce
a board member
Nicole combines stand-up comedy, dance, theater, live music, videos, and occasional nudity into entertainment like you haven't seen elsewhere. Check the Egoart website for info about performances.

I sit on the Advisory Board for Egoart and try to pass myself off as a wise elder statesman type by saying little, but nodding thoughtfully from time to time.

I also contribute occasional videos, photography, and graphics to the Egoshow galaxy.

ELEMENTS COMMUNICATIONS
I am a member of the collaborative known as Elements Communications.
Elements Graphics
which means?
I am privileged to work with Emily Hiestand and Barbara Hindley and the other creative team members on a variety of projects for nonprofits. The Food Project website was one result of working with Elements.

I also designed and built the website for Elements.

WALTER the DOG
Anybody who has known me for the last ten years knows that Walter the Dog is my constant companion.

Enough has been written about the wonderfulness of dogs and labs in particular.

I'll just say this: it's all true.
Walter the Dog
the Walter calendar
At one point it occurred to me to create a Walter the Dog calendar. The calendar has grown in popularity over the years, even as life has shifted from my old company CenterMedia, to my current life as a freelance.

The Walter Calendar will continue.

The calendar is for my friends, family, and clients. So all you have to do to get one is to become my friend, marry a family member, or become a client. The latter is surely the safest way to go.

THEATRE WORK
From time to time, with some arm twisting from set designer Ruth Neeman, I have done some theatre projects.

Generally my contributions have been in the form of projections that complement Ruth's award-winning set designs.
Laramie Project Projections
how can you forget nothing?
Theatre projections I have worked on with Ruth Neeman include:

At one point I actually appeared briefly on stage in a production of Lettice and Lovage, and — although I had no speaking lines — still had regular nightmares that I had forgotten my lines. Sometimes I wonder about myself.
