Print Design by Jon Sachs
PRINT DESIGN BY JON SACHS

I have done a good variety of print work, from single sell sheets and postcards to booklets and calendars. Sometimes the print work is an adjunct to a web design project, sometimes not. Recently, I have created eBooks as well.

BOOK AND E-BOOKS

I have designed two different books for Jonathan Pond, and supplied both for print and in both eBook formats (one for Kindle, and one for everything else.)

The eBook format is fairly new, so the techology for creating them is constantly changing.

In designing these book, I have worked to extend the look and branding from the websites I created into the print and eBook forms.

JONATHAN POND
Jonathan Pond is a well-known expert on investing and personal money management. We have worked together for a few years now to create a coordinated set of designs, including websites, flyers and books.

A FLYER

This 7 inch by 7 inch three-fold flyer has been a very useful sales tool for Jonathan Pond. His team uses it for outreach to clients and prospects in a variety of situations.

When Jonathan begain handling investment management it was a departure from his role purely as a TV guru. This flyer was one part of helping to establish Jonathan as a professional money manager.

PROJECT SHEETS

In spite of the mighty internet, it always feels a bit naked to go to a client meeting with nothing to place on the table for discussion and nothing to leave behind.

Project sheets are the answer, whether printed in small quantity via desktop printers, or in bulk by commercial printers.

The nice thing about unbound sheets is that you can pick and choose which ones to show to a given prospect.

HDN Architects
Heym Dowds and Neeman hads a very extensive library of strong projects and projects images to work with. The tricky part with architectural projects is that there is an unpredictable mix of vertical, square and horizontal images, which makes it a bit hard to come up with a design that is both flexible and still offers consistency from project sheet to sheet.

In each case we chose the single most important image and then designed around that. Colors for the labels were chosen from within the photographs, which gives each sheet a particular color harmony.

PROMOTIONAL BOOKLET
Every company seeks to distinguish itself from the competition. While a web site is ideal for supplying content and setting a tone, there is a special quality of experience that you get from large photography and expensive paper.
Collateral Booklet
Collateral Booklet
I conceived the idea of a crisp, clean booklet that would tell the Solid Sense story in a memorable way. The booklet went through a number of conceptual changes, but remained as a photography-based document, with a small amount of text.

I took all of the photos on location at Solid Sense and designed the final booklet using lively colors that contrast with the black and white images.

POSTCARDS

The single great advantage of the postcard is that it jumps out of a stack of mail — the first piece you read. Whether standard 4x6 or large 6x9, a postcard can make a splash.

And, if you create something memorable, people will tack it up to the wall or the fridge, giving the piece a long life.

How do you make the piece memorable? Calling me would be a heckuva good start on that.

Postcard
Nancy Schön Announcement
After we launched www.schon.com, Nancy wanted to send out an announcement for the new site. We chose the large postcard for its cost effectiveness and immediacy.

The front of the card is simply a reworking of the the homepage image of her signature sculpture. The back of the card gives viewers a glimpse of the gallery pages in the site.

CALENDARS
A really attractive calendar becomes a steady source of name recognition and customer loyalty. Calendars can be produced in bulk through commercial printing and binding or in small runs with desktop equipment.
Walter Calendar
The Walter Calendar
The Walter Calendar has been around for some years, and clients who don't receive theirs on time get pretty riled up. Each month has a large photo of my quasi-famous dog, a brief commercial message, and a photo caption that ties things together.

Generally, if you want people to keep and use the calendar, it's a good idea to include a real usable accurate calendar on each page, rather than some experimental unworkable concept calendar.

INVITATION
Whether folded or in flat, postcard form, it's fun to send and receive an invite. And something eye-catching is more likely to bring people to your event.
Invitation
Acupuncture Open House
This invitation is based on a photograph I took of lily pads, with just a bit of Photoshop help. The simple design and nature theme resonate well with the acupuncture topic.

This was a short run desktop printer project, but could easily have been commercially printed.

A LOGO FOR A PLAY
When a theatre buys the rights to a play they get the script, but no visual marketing materials. So just like any other entity, a play benefits from a logo that can be used on a web site, a poster, a program and even a T-shirt.
Theatre Logo
Dinner With Friends
This is an absorbing play about the politics between two couples who meet periodically for dinner. Working with the knife, fork, and spoon I came upon the tic-tac-toe idea.

I have done many logos for community theatre plays, but this is a favorite.

T-SHIRTS
The T-shirt is an excellent canvas for the name of your play, your company, or your road-race.
T-shirt
Reunion T-shirt
Quannapowitt Players, one of the Boston area's truly fine community theaters, needed a shirt for their production of David Mamet's Reunion to take to a theatre festival.

I don't do much illustration, but these two faces are part of a drawing style I have been working with for years and seemed right for an edgy play about a man and a woman.
